Creating presence in a group Convincing a number of people at the same time – in a meeting or a presentation – to support you is a key skill for anyone keen to develop presence. In either situation you as an individual want to present a message in a persuasive manner in order to achieve a desired outcome – it’s an opportunity to ‘sell ‘yourself and your ideas, whether it’s a project, a funding proposal, or a challenging recommendation.
The key challenges in a group situation versus one-to-one setting are:
- you have to quickly build rapport with a range of communications styles across the group
- you may need to identify and meet a range of different interests at the same time
- you need to organise and manage the structure much more than in a one to one
- when you hand over to the ‘audience’ you may have to deal with challenge and feedback – positive and negative.
This download deals mostly with the idea of presentations though the essential principles are the same for a meeting.
The key difference is that in a presentation you normally stand up to separate yourself from the group whereas in a meeting there is a more interactive element and you are more likely to stay seated.
